Fine Baroque architecture. In the Painted Hall, which was originally intended as Greenwich Hospital’s refectory, Sir James Thornhill’s murals depict the wisdom, virtue and achievements of the Stuart and Hanoverian monarchs. The Painted Hall is frequently used for banquets, concerts and other festivities. Admiral Nelson’s body lay in state in a side room here, prior to his funeral procession along the river Thames to his funeral in St Paul’s cathedral. The Chapel was rebuilt in C18 by James “Athenian” Stuart, after a fire had almost destroyed the previous Chapel. Part of the Old Royal Naval College now houses the University of Greenwich and Trinity College of Music.
