Christ Church Spitalfields

A Hawksmoor masterpiece

Christ Church Spitalfields, one of the 50 new churches proposed by 1711 Act of Parliament at the time of Queen Anne, is the most overpowering of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor’s 3 great East London Baroque churches. This Grade I listed building was recently restored at a cost of more than £6 million. Major structural improvements included the reconstruction of the gallery, which had been removed in the 19th century and the laying of a new Purbeck stone floor. Christ Church is once again at the centre of the community and arts events such as the Spitalfields Festival held biannually in June and December.
